Egg Recall: Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Illnesses in 9 States

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are investigating a Salmonella outbreak linked to eggs from Rose Acre Farms, one of the largest egg producers in the United States.
States Affected
As of March 16, 2023, nine states have reported illnesses linked to the outbreak:
- Colorado
- Florida
- Georgia
- Indiana
- Kentucky
- Michigan
- Missouri
- Nebraska
- Texas
The number of illnesses is expected to rise as the investigation continues.
Symptoms
Symptoms of Salmonella infection typically develop within 12 to 72 hours of eating contaminated food and can include:
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal cramps
- Fever
- Chills
- Headache
- Nausea
- Vomiting
In severe cases, Salmonella infection can lead to hospitalization and even death.
Advice
The FDA advises consumers to avoid eating recalled eggs from Rose Acre Farms. Consumers who have already purchased eggs from Rose Acre Farms should return them to the store or discard them immediately.
The CDC recommends that consumers take the following steps to prevent Salmonella infection:
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling eggs.
- Do not eat raw or undercooked eggs.
- Cook eggs until the yolk and white are firm.
- Store eggs in the refrigerator at 40°F or below.
- Discard any eggs that are cracked or have a foul odor.
